At Most Holy Rosary Elementary School, our Performing Arts Program provides students with a platform to explore their creativity and develop their talents in music and theater. We believe that performing arts are vital for fostering personal expression, confidence, and collaboration, all within a supportive and nurturing environment.
Music Education
Our music curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong love of music through hands-on learning and meaningful performance experiences. The program focuses on two primary goals: creating music as a group and cultivating an appreciation for listening to music. Music classes, led by Timothy Herron, guide students in understanding rhythm, melody, harmony, and the basics of music theory.
Starting in the second grade, students begin learning how to read music and apply their skills using simple instruments like xylophones. Older students expand their musical repertoire by mastering the recorder. Listening to music plays an integral role in our curriculum as well. Students are introduced to classical, jazz, blues, folk, and American music history, broadening their understanding and appreciation of different genres.
Performance is a cornerstone of our program, with every student expected to participate and contribute to their group’s success. Our school community comes together for two annual concerts—the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert—showcasing the talents of students from all grades. Additionally, second through sixth-grade students lead the congregation in Mass music, honing their singing skills and understanding the arrangement of liturgical songs.
Beyond these events, fourth through sixth-grade students enjoy an enriching “Sound of Music” field trip, deepening their appreciation for the performing arts and adding an extra layer of excitement to their musical journey.
Theater Education
Theater and drama classes at Most Holy Rosary Elementary School encourage students to build confidence, enhance their storytelling abilities, and collaborate effectively. Through a variety of theatrical experiences—from acting to stage production—students learn the art of communication and creativity. These experiences not only nurture individual expression but also teach the value of teamwork and dedication.
Our theater program, led by Caitlin Friedberg, is the only one of its kind in the Syracuse Diocese, making it a vital part of our curriculum. Each week, students participate in theater classes that promote creativity and self-expression as they explore various aspects of drama. The program includes opportunities for students to engage in chorus and drama, enhancing their understanding of the performing arts. Extracurricular activities such as playwriting and puppetry foster collaboration and build confidence among students. Furthermore, participation in community visual art exhibits allows students to share their creative expressions, enriching their overall educational experience.
Whether performing on stage or leading behind the scenes, our students develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives. By participating in drama, they gain the courage to share their voices and embrace their unique identities.
